The most popular place for weekend walks for the inhabitants of Żary is the so-called Żarski las (Żary Forest). It borders with the city from the south close to the village Łazy. Already in the 19th century this was a recreational area. The scenery here is very varied. Hills are crossed with many deep valleys. One may also see old beech trees. Thanks to the decision of Lubuskie Voivode from 1996, law protects the bigger part of the Forest and its landscape. Many trees started to be the monuments of nature. The tourist attraction is the brick and stone tower, built in 1864 on the tallest hill that is 227 meters high (Góra Żarska). During the sunny days one may see the panorama of Karnonosze and Izerskie Mountains from it. Góra Żarska is the second tallest hill in Lubuskie region. The Żary Forest is easily accessible with the tourist trails (red and black) as well as by bike. During winter you may also train ski running.
