Monument of the Little Insurgent in Warsaw

A unique monument erected in honour of the young insurgents who fought heroically during the Warsaw Uprising for the independence of Warsaw.

Within the city walls, on Podwale Street, in the foundations of an old tower, stands one of the most remarkable monuments in Warsaw. It is called the Monument of the Little Insurgent. It is only 1.5m tall but surrounded by the contrasting high walls it appears even smaller. It commemorates all the young people who, during the Warsaw Uprising, served as orderlies or runners. Many faught with weopons in hand as is portrayed by the figure in the monument.

The sculpture was modelled on a small plaster statuette created after the war by the sculptor Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz, with the casting made in 1983. The monument was funded by donations from scouts – fundraising was started several years earlier by scouts from Warsaw.

The monument was unveiled on 1 October 1983 by a scout – insurgent Jerzy Swiderski – now a cardiologist, but during the Uprising a 14-year old runner, nicknamed „Lubicz”, in the „Gustaw” battalion. Behind the statue is a memorial plaque inscribed with words from one of the best known songs of the Warsaw Uprising, „Children of Warsaw, let us go into battle, for every stone we shall give our blood”
