A vast collection of ceramics created by three generations of noted Kaszubian potters – the Necel family.
Chelmno attracts tourists and sightseers not only because of its beautiful scenery and clear water lakes but also the interesting folklore, monuments and its pottery traditions examples of which are displayed in the Necel Museum of Kaszubian Pottery. The museum was founded in 1993 and is housed in the former workshop of the Necel family, the largest family along with the Elas family, of Kaszubian potters.
It is an unusual museum not only because it has many valuable examples of Kaszubian ceramics but there is also an exhibition of a potter at work at his potter’s wheel and visitors can also have a go at “pot throwing” themselves. In the work shop, all stages of the production of ceramic items are demonstrated – from a lump of clay on the potter’s wheel to the finished product, after baking in the kiln.
The exhibition also presents the history and examples of pottery by three generations of the Necel family. There are seven beautiful examples of pottery with the stamp of successive masters each having its own distinctive shape and hand-painted design. Visitors can learn about the rich history of the Necel family, who for 100 years in Chelmno have been creating works of pottery art.
