Road Sign in Konin

The oldest stone road signpost in Poland

This is undoubtedly the oldest sign post in Poland. It is located in the city, next to the Church of Saint Bartlomiej. On it is a Roman inscription in Latin saying that it was paid for by Count Piotr in 1151 and shows half the road from Kalisz to Kruszwica. This unique monument was placed by the major trade route in the Middle Ages, 52km, from both Kruszwica and Kalisz. It is exactly 252cm high and made from Brzezinski sandstone.

Originally (till 1828) it was located in the cemetery, close to Konin castle on the current Zamkowy Square formerly known as Rynek Garncarski. It was then taken to the location where it stands today. Renovation work of the road sign was recently carried out using desalinating and cleaning products. The green coating was removed from its surface leaving the Latin inscription much clearer.

The natural coloration of the stone also appeared. Also, at this time the sign post was surrounded by cobbles in a circular pattern, rather than the square pattern up till then. The scheme to surround it also with some vegetation was abandoned so as to protect the site from too much moisture.
