The colourful countryside of Krynica, the wooden villas, church towers, and geometric chequered fields are the dominant themes in the art of Nikifor nicknamed Krynicki. The real name of this self taught painter was Epifaniusz Drowniak (1895-1968). Recognised as an artist just before his death, Nikifor lived unappreciated most of his life in dire poverty and was regarded as a madman. He used to sell his works for small change crouched by the walk side at the local spa resort. He painted on scraps of paper, pieces of cardboard, and back covers of notebooks… Today his works can be viewed in the museum at the historical “Romanόwka” villa by the Krynica’s town promenade.
