Prussian fort designed to defence before enemy ships.
The construction of the fort started in 1856. A year later, a single-storey redoubt built on a square plan was ready, equipped with 9 artillery embrasures and 6 shooting slots for small arms. By 1861, it was surrounded with a wet moat, defensive walls from the north. Some of the field cannon posts were moved to the rampart. The fort s name kept changing: From Werk IV into Batterie A and ultimately to Westbatterie (the Western Battery). Following modernization and reconstructin of the fort in 1878-1881, four heavy costal cannons werer installed here. Since 2000, fort has been open to the public for viewing.
