Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw

An impressive building in the centre of the capital commemorating the death of nameless heroes that fought for Polish independence.

This is a form of commemoration of unidentified soldiers that died in the defence of their homeland. In Poland the most famous Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is found in Warsaw on Marshal Jozef Pilsudski Square. It is part of the three central arches of the former Saski Palace. The tomb was established in 1925 by the then Minister of War, Wladyslaw Sikorski.

After the war, on 8th May 1946, the eternal flame was lit again next to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and urns with soil collected from 24 fields of battle were placed inside. Ceremonial changing of the guard and the laying of wreaths by representatives of the authorities takes place here during national holidays. The Guard of Honour at the tomb is around the clock and carried out by soldiers from the Representative Battalion of the Polish Army.
