The history of city of Klodawa dates back to 2000BC, with evidence of excavated tombs and burial mounds in the surrounding area. It is a city that can boast about possessing its civic rights for nearly 600 years. The rapidly growing city was destroyed during the Swedish invasion, which also decimated its inhabitants.
FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
The Klodawa Salt Mine was founded in 1949 which was the result of geological research before World War II, which indicated the location of a vast and shallow deposit of salt. After further tests, it was determined that it was the largest deposit in the Polish Lowlands and had an approximately length of 26km. Today, after modernization and expansion of the mine, the raw material is sourced from two mining levels, at depths of 600 and 750 metres.
On 4th December 2004, during the Miner's Day celebrations, of the so-called “Barborka”, the mine was blessed and the Klodawska Underground Tourist Route opened to the public for the first time.
As part of the tour, the mining elevator takes visitors 600m underground, to St. Kinga’s Passageways, who in fact did not leave her ring here but a rich deposit of high quality salt. During the tour, the guide will introduce everyone to the origins of salt deposits and their application and also show the work of the powerful mining machinery that is used today for salt mining underground.
