Unlike other train shelters on Polish territory, the shelter in Strzyzow has the characteristics of a tunnel. The Germans, while designing their project “Anlage Sud”, decided to use the tunnel on the railway line between Jaslo and Rzeszow that was built before World War I.
FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
Due to its logistics, the design and construction of this facility was conducted at the same time as the facility in nearby Stepin. The excavated tunnel was secured with a concrete and brick surround and the openings were closed off with armoured doors. The tunnel is 465 meters long and inside has a several dozen metre long siding. From the Strzyzow side is the entrance to the underground corridor that leads to the complex of technical buildings in the form of two concrete blocks. The standard technical equipment shelters contained power generators, boilers, filters and fans which took heated and purified air through underground channels to the train shelter. Other facilities housed transformers, wells and water treatment plants. Each site had its own fresh water and sewage facility. During the war it was used on several occasions to conceal special trains. After the war it was used as a storage facility and even in 2002, it was intended to use it for a military firing range. Currently, the structure is accessible to the public and is a popular tourist attraction in Strzyzow.
